Public transportation gets a major boost in the federal budget

From Rs 3 billion last fiscal year, the subsidy has been increased to Rs 7.3 billion this year.

The Federal Budget 2026-27 has brought major relief to the people of Rawalpindi and Islamabad in the public transport sector, with a significant increase in subsidies for Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services.

The subsidy allocated to public transport in the twin cities has been significantly increased in the federal budget 2026-27.

Compared to Rs3 billion in the previous financial year, the subsidy has been increased to Rs7.3 billion for the new financial year.

The additional grant will apply to both the metropolitan bus service and the green electric bus service, further improving the provision of affordable and quality transport facilities to commuters.

The metro bus service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad has been operating successfully since 2014 and is used by millions of passengers daily.

According to officials, a plan to operate green electric buses in 20 additional sectors and routes in the twin cities has also been included in the new financial year.

Public transport services have already been launched on 23 routes in Rawalpindi division, while green electric buses will be introduced gradually on 20 more routes.
