- AMD’s RX 9070 XT GPU is finally in the Steam hardware survey
- Since May 2026, it’s suddenly the most popular AMD GPU
- It has a market share of 1.33%, but Nvidia remains far ahead of AMD overall.
While Nvidia’s current focus is certainly not on its gaming graphics cards, the desktop GPU market is still firmly in control, although things could be looking up for rival AMD.
As TweakTown reports, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is suddenly the most popular AMD GPU, according to Valve’s latest Steam hardware survey. In May 2026, the 9070
As always, it’s worth noting that Valve’s Steam surveys are only a limited perspective on the overall market. Of course, not everyone uses Steam, and the survey is limited to a relatively small slice of gamers on the platform. That said, Valve’s survey results offer an interesting insight into the state of popularity of hardware and software.
The popularity of the RX 9070
What’s more surprising is why this GPU wasn’t present at all in Steam’s GPU rankings before. TweakTown theorizes that the sudden appearance of the 9070 XT could be due to recent GPU classification survey updates, which is a possibility.
Another one-sided battle
Given that the GPU market is still in disarray due to the RAM crisis and its impact on video RAM, the Radeon RX 9070 XT and 9060 XT (which are also now present among Valve’s May survey results) are arguably the most cost-effective GPUs available. They’re not as cheap as Nvidia’s low-end RTX 5000 GPUs, but these Radeon graphics cards are still affordable and offer much better performance.
Still, it’s hard to see Nvidia’s GeForce GPUs falling out of favor anytime soon, and they clearly remain dominant in the desktop realm. Team Green’s DLSS upscaling technology remains superior to its AMD and Intel equivalents, and it really impresses in terms of image quality and performance.
Nvidia’s RTX 3060 is still the most popular GPU, as it has been for years in the Steam survey results, but it’s good to see Team Red’s latest GPU lineup finally putting up a fight – even if the competition is still very one-sided.
