Air travelers are expected to face major disruptions as the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) confirmed that runways will be closed for much of July 3-4.
The disruption is intended to accommodate the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
No flights will be operated from the domestic airport after noon on July 4, and there will also be a few additional closing hours in the early afternoon of July 3. The cause is ambitious plans for spectacular fireworks, air shows and training over the nation’s capital.
Here is the full list of events and their expected impact on air transport:
| Date | Event | Impact on flights |
| June 24-25 | Grand opening of the American State Fair | Temporary detentions possible, limited time limits |
| June 28 | Military Appreciation Day | Temporary detentions possible, limited time limits |
| July 3 | Independence Day Rehearsals | No flights scheduled for several hours early in the afternoon |
| July 4 | Independence Day Celebrations and Fireworks | No flights scheduled after 12:00 (noon) |
| July 10 | Flyover and closing parachute jump of the Great American State Fair | Temporary detentions possible; limited deadlines |
| August 22-23 | Grand Prix near the National Mall | Temporary detentions possible; limited deadlines |
Which flights are most at risk?
All flights scheduled after noon on July 4: These have already been removed from the schedule
Flights scheduled for the early afternoon of July 3: it is very likely that they will be canceled or postponed.
Flights on June 24 and 25, June 28, July 10 and August 22 and 23: possibility of temporary suspensions
Will other airports be affected?
MWAA said Dulles International Airport would not be similarly affected by disruptions. Passengers who wish to avoid delays can arrive via Dulles (IAD) or Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) on affected days. But the authority warned that passengers should have checked the status of their flights regardless of the airport.
Parking and terminal access details
Although flight operations are completely suspended at Reagan National Airport, parking lots will remain open. However, MWAA noted that parking at the airport for non-air travel is extremely limited.
Access to Gravelly Point from the Reagan National Metro station will be clearly marked with signs for spectators wishing to view nearby fireworks.
The agency further noted that there are no designated sites where spectators can watch fireworks at airport facilities.
