Massoud’s inclusion in EU negotiations angers Taliban

PESHAWAR:

Europe is reportedly considering engaging with two separate Afghanistan-linked committees on the return of Afghan migrants, including one involving Ahmad Massoud, the leader of the National Resistance Front, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The development is seen in diplomatic circles as an indication that European countries may still consider other Afghan political interlocutors alongside the Taliban administration that currently rules Afghanistan.

In Brussels, Afghanistan has reportedly formed a seven-member committee to work with the European Union to repatriate more than 27,000 undocumented Afghan migrants. However, sources said Taliban authorities were surprised to learn that Massoud had also been invited to the discussions on the same issue.

A senior source within the Taliban administration said diplomatic contacts with the Afghan embassy in Germany confirmed Massoud’s invitation.
