QUETTA: The Balochistan government has decided to send Dr Mahnoor Nasir, who was attacked with acid at a hospital in Quetta, to the United States for specialized treatment, an official said on Friday.

Shahid Rind, aide to Balochistan Chief Minister, said CM Sarfraz Bugti had approved Dr Mahnoor’s treatment abroad as the provincial government had initiated the necessary process for the treatment.

According to Rind, the Chief Minister’s Secretariat had officially sent a letter to the relevant authorities in this regard.

He added that the victim would continue to receive treatment at a private hospital in Karachi for another week before treatment arrangements in the United States are finalized.

Rind said the provincial government was using all available resources to ensure the affected doctor received the best possible medical facilities and care.

The woman doctor is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karachi where she was transferred earlier this month after she was attacked with acid at the Civil Hospital in Quetta.

Hours after the incident, police said the suspect involved in the acid attack was killed during an altercation.

After his transfer to Karachi hospital, sources said reconstructive surgeons and ophthalmologists had completed their assessment of the doctor.

According to sources, Dr Mahnoor suffered burns on his face, abdomen, legs and right hand.

They said the victim suffered burns to more than 13 percent of his body. Although his eyes were also affected by the acid, his vision remained intact.

As Dr Mahnoor underwent treatment for his injuries, the Balochistan chief minister announced a civil sentence for a man who rushed to his aid after the acid attack.

In an article on X on July 7, the Balochistan chief minister announced the decision while sharing a photo of hospital staff member Abdul Razzaq Tarakai.

CM Bugti hailed Tarakai as a “valuable asset to society” for rushing to the aid of the woman doctor during the attack, saying “civilian award will be given to Abdul Razzaq Tarakai” for displaying extraordinary courage, humanity and devotion to duty.
