- Proton Launches Business-Focused Migration Tool for Gmail and More
- Both suites can run simultaneously to avoid downtime
- However, Proton does not make migration easy
Proton has launched a new Easy Switch for Business tool to help businesses migrate from Google Workspace with minimal disruption and downtime, amid a growing number of businesses looking to turn their backs on Big Tech.
The announcement comes as European companies are particularly keen to find alternatives to US software giants, amid concerns over data privacy, regulatory compliance and broader technological sovereignty.
Proton says its Easy Switch tool is intended to address some of the challenges that businesses most worry about when making a change, such as operational disruption and costs.
Although Proton product offerings also include Drive, Docs, and Sheets, this tool is specifically for email, calendars, and contacts.
It’s important to note that Google Workspace and Proton run concurrently during the migration so there is no interruption. Users can continue as normal while the change occurs without experiencing outages or disruptions.
This also means that IT teams and administrators can move selected user accounts first and onboard teams in stages while running both suites at the same time, giving them time to ensure everything is working as expected.
Proton boasts that more than 100,000 organizations – including newsrooms, law firms, technology companies, consulting firms, NGOs and government agencies – have already migrated to its platform.
The company currently does not offer a similar tool for Drive and the documents it contains, requiring users to export from Google Drive and re-upload to Proton Drive.
More importantly, Proton does not have a mass migration or export system for its Drive for users looking to move away from the platform. Due to file-by-file encryption, users must open and download each file individually.
