Miles Russell is the youngest player at the 2026 US Open at just 17 years old. Competing in a major championship at that age, let alone qualifying like he did at Shinnecock Hills, was already an unforgettable week for him and his family.

The young man, however, had one final surprise up his sleeve for Sunday’s final round, which not only will his family cherish forever, but which also left many golf fans watching the moment unfold a little misty-eyed.

After hitting his approach shot on the par-4 18th, Russell’s caddy headed toward the gallery. He then took off his bib and handed it and Russell’s golf bag to Russell’s father, Joe.

TEENAGE PHENOM MILES RUSSELL MAKES THE ENTIRE GOLF WORLD OLD WITH STUNNING QUOTE BEFORE US OPEN DEBUT

According to the NBC show, this was all Russell’s idea. He contacted USGA rules officials before teeing off Sunday to ask if it was OK for his father to take over caddy duties for the final hole, and they gave him the go-ahead.

Talk about a Father’s Day gift that may never be out of date.

“It was pretty cool,” Russell said after Sunday’s final round. “Right there, turning 18, that’s when he stepped in. It was a pretty fun Father’s Day gift. Pretty cool since it was my first. Hopefully it’s something he’ll remember for a long time.”

Russell shot 3-over in the first two rounds of the US Open to advance by two shots. During the third round on Saturday, he struggled a bit en route to a 74, but he confirmed with a final score of par.

Russell qualified for this week’s US Open after reaching the final stage of qualifying in a three-way playoff vying for two spots in the field. He had Charlie Woods, Tiger’s son, on the bag as a caddy during qualifying. Both Woods and Russell have committed to play college golf at Florida State.

In 2024, Russell became the youngest player in Korn Ferry Tour history to qualify in a tournament, ultimately finishing T-20.
