INGLEWOOD: Iran left a message in their dressing room at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, thanking Los Angeles for their hospitality during the World Cup and saying they were leaving with dignity after a 0-0 draw against Belgium kept their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.
Los Angeles has hosted both of Iran’s Group G matches so far, with the team returning to its base in Tijuana, Mexico, between matches.
Iran spent the tournament in Tijuana, traveling to the United States for its matches due to restrictions surrounding its stay in the country, while a number of Iranian team staff and officials were banned.
U.S. officials said the team’s travel arrangements would continue to be evaluated, while discussions about easing some restrictions continued.
“From ancient Persia thousands of years ago to today’s civilized Iran, the spirit of Iran remains alive and unwavering,” reads the handwritten note released by the Iranian football federation.
“Thank you Los Angeles for your hospitality.
“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honor and leave with dignity.”
The note also thanks Iranian fans who gave “their heart, voice and soul” for the team in both matches and ends with a call for peace, respect and friendship among all nations.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei has repeatedly criticized the travel restrictions imposed on his team, saying his team has faced challenges no other team has had to endure.
Iran, who drew 2-2 against New Zealand in their first match at SoFi Stadium, will play their final group match against Egypt in Seattle.
