Newly elected members of the British Assembly sworn in

Pakistan People’s Party emerged as the largest party with 11 seats, followed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz with six seats.

The newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly were sworn in on Monday at the inaugural session held at the Gilgit Assembly Hall, officially marking the start of a new five-year legislature.

Britain’s Chief Electoral Commissioner, Raja Shahbaz Khan, announced the final results for all 24 constituencies on June 17, almost 10 days after the vote. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) emerged as the largest party in the assembly with 11 seats, followed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with six.

The Istehkam-e-Pakistan party became the third largest parliamentary group after four successful independent candidates joined the party after the elections. The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen won one seat, while the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed independents won two seats.

The outgoing lawyer for the Speaker of the British Assembly, Nazir Ahmed, administered the oath of office to newly elected lawmakers. During the ceremony, all members pledged to serve the people, respect the Constitution and the law and discharge their responsibilities with honesty and dedication.

After the swearing-in ceremony, the assembly is expected to continue its planned work in accordance with the internal regulations. The agenda includes the election of the President, Vice President and Leader of the House, as well as other parliamentary matters.

A day earlier, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had appointed PPP Provincial Chairman Amjad as GB Chief Minister, according to a post shared by the party on X.

On June 20, deliberations between the PPP and the PML-N regarding the distribution of offices resulted in an agreement that the former would get the seat of chief minister, while the seats of governor, leader of the opposition and deputy speaker of the British Assembly would go to the PML-N leadership.

The PPP won the majority of seats in the June 7 elections. The opposition, including the PTI, rejected the election results and denounced widespread fraud and manipulation.
