Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to represent Pakistan at international forum in Russia from June 24-26

KARACHI:
Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court Justice Munib Akhtar on Monday took oath as the Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan in the absence of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi.
Chief Justice Afridi is expected to represent Pakistan at the International Legal Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia from June 24-26.
According to a press release issued by the apex court, the oath was administered by Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui at the Karachi registry of the Supreme Court.
After the ceremony, Justice Akhtar assumed the responsibilities of the office and will serve as the Chief Justice until Justice Afridi returns from his foreign visit.
As the most senior judge of the apex court after the Chief Justice, Justice Akhtar assumed this role in accordance with established constitutional and judicial practice.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by judges of the Supreme Court and the Federal Constitutional Court, as well as senior court officials and members of the legal community. The Clerk of the Supreme Court conducted the proceedings.
Justice Yahya Afridi became the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan on October 26, 2024, after being appointed by a 12-member special parliamentary committee following the adoption of the 26th constitutional amendment.
His term as chief justice is expected to continue until October 2027.
