- The country of Georgia has finally arrived on Google Street View
- Google has highlighted several major sites worth checking out
- Images are available in Google Maps and Google Earth
Street View is still expanding, almost 20 years after Google launched, and the Eastern European country of Georgia is the latest to be added to the platform – with spectacular sights and landmarks included, in addition to all the roads and highways.
“Georgia is a country defined by the breadth of its history and the spectacular diversity of its landscapes,” says Google, which worked with the Georgian government to get the country featured on the Street View map.
Some 13,000 kilometers (8,078 miles) of roads have been added and can be viewed on Google Maps and Google Earth. You can visit the Jvari Monastery (part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the medieval stone towers of Ushguli and the Peace Bridge that crosses the Kura River in the capital Tbilisi.
There is also Telavi in the Kakheti region, the center of a winemaking tradition in Georgia that dates back 8,000 years. The grapes from these vineyards are still fermented in traditional clay jars called qvevri, buried underground.
Another level GeoGuessr
Another site to see: the Jvari pass, located high in the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Spend a few minutes clicking through the new Street View images and you’ll discover plenty of fantastic views.
Of course, you don’t have to visit the biggest tourist sites or the most famous routes. In Google Maps on the web, simply drag the little yellow pegman (bottom right) somewhere on the map. When you hover your mouse cursor, Street View roads will turn blue, and this now includes Georgia.
Aside from checking out potential places to travel, the new images are also a boon for GeoGuessr players trying to name the country from a Street View image. One poster calls it a “beautiful country,” which is a “wonderful addition.”
Although many of us are accustomed to Street View images in our part of the world, this is not yet the case everywhere. Countries like Cyprus and Paraguay were only added last year, while they are absent in China and many countries in Africa and the Middle East.
