- Matt Webster, CEO of Fuse Games, confirms Star Wars: Galactic Runner has a structure based on races in the campaign
- Webster says “consequential decision-making” is built within the campaign
- Creative director Kieran Crimmins says that when the team prototyped the system, “it seemed perfect” for Galactic Runner
Star Wars: Galactic Runner will feature a race-based structure within the campaign, which Fuse Games says will involve “consequential decision-making.”
That’s according to Matt Webster, co-founder and CEO of Fuse Games, who told TechRadar Gaming in an interview at Summer Game Fest 2026 (SGF) that while he and the team love arcade racing games, “you can’t really make one the same way you did all those years ago” because game genres have adapted and evolved.
Webster said the team wanted to bring something new to Galactic Runnerand racing-based structures, which “are designed for replayability and racing thrives on replayability”, and in other games the “meta” is car collecting. Instead, the team shook things up by bringing “consequential decision-making and consequences back into the experience.”
Creative director Kieran Crimmins added that “consequence” was “key” to Galactic Runnersaying, “We want every decision to matter, every upgrade to matter, every vehicle to matter, every race to matter, and as the race-based structure allows us to do that, like we’ve never done in an arcade racer before.”
“Not only do you have to stay on top of the curve with your build, your skills and your track knowledge, but you also have to reset every time,” Crimmins continued.
In other arcade racing games, the developer explained, cars can be upgraded to the maximum level, but then players will realize they haven’t experienced 99 percent of the other systems. And while they can always be reviewed, the race-based structure “allows you to do so with consequences.”
“It gives you a reason to try all these different versions, a reason to experiment, and also a reward if you get the right synergies, if you get the right version, and if you get the right knowledge,” Crimmins said.
“Then that’s what actually wins the game, so it was incredibly compelling for us to have a structure that not only changed the way you play, but changed the way you play that was beneficial to the feels you get in a racing game, and like anything, the way we did it is we prototyped it and it felt right.
“It’s an innovation that we think we can bring to the genre.”
During the interview, Crimmins also revealed that the game will feature a combination of moving parts that number “in the thousands,” across racing styles, abilities, upgrades, and then the different environmental effects that occur on planets.
“It’s incredibly deep,” the creative director said.
Star Wars: Galactic Runner arrives October 6 on PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S and PC.
