A doctor who returned to France after serving in Congo tested positive for Ebola.
This is the first case of Ebola virus reported in France during the current epidemic, confirms the French Ministry of Health, Wednesday June 24, 2026.
The ministry issued a statement confirming that the patient is in isolation, adding that the risk of transmission of the virus to the general public is low.
The Ebola outbreak in Congo has so far killed 267 people and infected more than 1,000 people.
According to the WHO, the Ebola virus recorded the highest number of confirmed Ebola cases in the first month following an episode of the disease.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a type of Ebola for which the WHO has not approved any drugs or vaccines.
However, authorities are working on testing vaccines on four candidates, but clinical trials have not yet started.
Germany and the Czech Republic hospitalized two doctors infected with the Ebola virus last month.
The disease has the potential to kill up to 90% of infected patients and can relapse in patients who have recovered months or years later.
Common symptoms of Ebola are prolonged high fever, joint or body pain, nausea, diarrhea and dehydration, rash, and in some cases bleeding.
