World Cup program for Thursday June 25
Ecuador vs. Germany
Germany and Ecuador meet on Thursday at New York New Jersey Stadium in a Group E match where the two teams face very different realities.
Coming into the tournament, Ecuador was seen as a team capable of making a deep run into the round of 16. In qualifying for the World Cup under CONMEBOL’s single table format, Ecuador finished second, just behind Argentina. Their defense has been historically good as they have only conceded five goals, including just one in their last 11 games.
After two games without a win, Ecuador is considering a scenario in which they must defeat a powerful German team just to advance.
Curaçao vs. Ivory Coast
Although it is the smallest country in terms of size and area to never qualify For the World Cup, little Curaçao enters its last Group E match on Thursday with a chance of qualifying for the round of 16. Of course, it will be extremely difficult because it will require a victory against a very good Ivory Coast team, but this tournament was full of surprises and showed that anything can happen.
Tunisia vs Netherlands
The Netherlands will look to secure first place in Group F when they face Tunisia on Thursday at Kansas City Stadium. The Netherlands enter the match with four points and are flying high after a terrific 5-1 win over Sweden on Saturday. On the other hand, Tunisia is in complete disarray and has already been eliminated.
The Netherlands enters this match even on points and even goal differential with Japan leading the group. Given that Japan and the Netherlands drew their match, first place could come down to goal differential if both teams win their final.
Japan vs Sweden
There’s a lot at stake for Japan and Sweden when the two teams meet Thursday at Dallas Stadium in Group F. Japan enters the match with four points while Sweden has three. The winner of this match is assured of a place in the round of 16, or even the group title depending on the performance of the Netherlands (also on four points) against Tunisia.
Japan enters this match as deserved favorites and can win the group if they beat Sweden and the Dutch stumble. Even if both teams win, Japan can win Group F if its margin of victory is greater than that of the Netherlands.
Türkiye vs. United States
Co-hosts the United States will face Turkey on Thursday at Los Angeles Stadium in the Group D final for both teams. The United States has already clinched the group title after winning its first two matches by multi-goal margins and outscoring its opponents 6-1. Meanwhile, Turkey lost its first two matches and was eliminated. He will end his disappointing World Cup campaign after this match.
Paraguay vs Australia
Second place in Group D and a guaranteed place in the round of 16 are on the line when Paraguay and Australia face off on Thursday at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Both teams lost to the United States and beat Turkey to come in with three points. But Australia has the advantage in the goal differential tiebreaker and will claim second place if the teams play to a draw.
Based on the teams’ performances in their first two matches, this matchup has no clear favorite and is difficult to predict.
