Dutch footballer Cody Gakpo suffered a heartbreaking personal loss during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after his partner announced she had suffered a miscarriage and the couple lost their unborn baby.
The Liverpool star’s partner Noa van der Bij shared the devastating news through an emotional social media post, revealing their baby boy died during pregnancy.
The couple previously announced that they were expecting their second child together. They had also chosen the name Elijah Raphael Gakpo for their unborn son.
In the emotional message, Van der Bij said: “Heartbroken, we share the devastating news of the death of our baby boy while pregnant. »
She expressed her gratitude to fans for their “love and support.”
The tragic development comes as Gakpo is away with the Netherlands national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he has been one of the country’s standout players.
Despite the personal tragedy, reports suggest the Liverpool striker will remain with the Dutch team following discussions with his partner and family members.
The Dutch Football Association also expressed support for the player and his family, describing the loss as a deeply private matter and asking for respect for their privacy.
Gakpo, who plays for Premier League giants Liverpool, has not publicly commented on the defeat beyond the statement shared by his partner.
