Canada entered Sunday’s Round of 16 match as a heavy favorite to advance to the Round of 16 with a victory over South Africa. But it hasn’t been as easy for the Canadians as the odds would have us believe.

Both teams went into stoppage time in the second half with a score of 0-0. But Canada managed to score the winning goal in the 92nd minute. A cross into the Canadian box landed directly on the head of a South African defender, but the header bounced into the chest of Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustáquio.

Eustáquio placed the ball on his right foot, then made no mistake, firing a shot into the bottom left corner of the net, past South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Canada generated the better chances throughout the match, placing seven shots on goal to South Africa’s one and holding a 1.32-0.13 advantage in expected goals, but the Canadians failed to break through until Eustáquio’s late goal.
