- The California government will have access to Anthropic’s Claude at a 50% discount
- Technology will be used to improve workflows and cybersecurity
- Governor Newsom said Claude would be used “responsibly, transparently and in service of the people”
The California government will now be able to use Anthropic’s Claude AI at half price.
A press release issued by California Governor Gavin Newsom says the state government will also have access to free workforce training, technical assistance from GenAI experts, and workflow input from Anthropic developers.
“This partnership is about using technology the California way: responsibly, transparently, and in service of citizens. AI should not replace human work in government; it should help our workers act faster, solve problems more effectively, and deliver better results for Californians,” said Governor Newson.
Claude comes to California
Claude’s discount also extends to local governments at the city and county level, allowing officials with lower budgets access to cutting-edge technology. Governor Newson said the technology will be used primarily for writing, summarizing and analyzing, while “complementing everyday work and improving services for Californians.”
California state agencies will be able to access Claude through Statewide Shared Information Technology Services (SITeS), a new portal that centralizes AI tools for government use. The California government has already worked alongside Anthropic to integrate Claude into numerous tools for public officials, such as the Engaged California tool which gives Californians a greater voice in policymaking.
Claude Security and Claude Code are also integrated into California Department of Technology and California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services workflows to improve cybersecurity. The California DMV will use Claude to reduce wait times and improve services, and the Department of Health Services will use Claude to contribute to the state’s Medicaid program.
The state is home to 33 of the world’s 50 largest private AI companies, including Anthropic. “As a California company, we feel a real responsibility to our home state. We are honored to expand our partnership with California agencies and put Claude to work for the people who make this state tick,” said Kate Jensen, head of Americas for Anthropic.
“Building AI responsibly and for people has been our approach since the beginning, and that’s exactly what this partnership puts into practice. »
