Boston has never been so alive: Dave Portnoy

The United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) did its job to start this 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil, winning Group D and advancing to the Round of 16.
Now the real race they’ve been looking forward to for four years begins Wednesday night in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The USMNT will face Bosnia and Herzegovina, one of the biggest stories of this World Cup, in the round of 16 to determine who advances to the tournament and who goes home.

For the “visitors” in this case, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s run not only allowed Italy, an iconic football country, to qualify for this World Cup, but they did enough to become a third-place team playing in this inaugural expanded format.

Their 3-1 win over Qatar on June 24 gave them the three points needed to move on after a draw against Canada, another host nation alongside the United States and Mexico, earned them one point. They lost to Switzerland, 4-1, as the Group B winners took flight.
But Bosnia and Herzegovina knew what they had to do against Qatar, and now they continue their momentum in a match against a U.S. team that was hoping for a little more of its own when it faced Turkey in its final Group D match last week.
Of course, the match meant nothing, but Türkiye’s late goal in stoppage time gave them a 3-2 victory that spoiled what appeared to be a 2-2 draw in Los Angeles. Certainly, American manager Mauricio Pochettino took no risks, leaving many of his usual starting XI on the bench, although Christian Pulisic returned in the second half after missing time with a calf injury.

However, this is a pessimistic view. The optimistic Patriot dismissed this match as nothing, as the USMNT has already punched its ticket to the Round of 16 with a 4-2 victory over Paraguay, who just upset Germany on Monday afternoon in Boston with a penalty shootout victory to advance to the Round of 16, and a 2-0 victory over Australia to win Group D.
Now, with many of the starters well-rested and the crowd still on their side in the Bay Area, the United States are heavy favorites to get the job done against Bosnia-Herzegovina and cement their own spot in the Round of 16.
