Anthropic restores Fable and Mythos AI models after US lifts export controls

Anthropic is restoring access to its two most advanced AI models after the U.S. government lifted export controls that required it to remove them last month.

Controls on Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 were lifted on June 30, the company said. Fable 5 returns globally on July 1 to Anthropic’s platforms, while Mythos 5, which shares the same underlying model but has fewer security restrictions, is being rolled back to a range of US organizations following government approval on June 26.

The freeze dates from June 12, when the government applied export controls to both models, rules that limit foreign nationals’ access to technology.

Since the order took effect immediately and Anthropic couldn’t verify users’ nationalities in real time, it suspended access for everyone rather than risk breaking the rule.

The trigger was a cybersecurity breakthrough after Amazon researchers reported a way to bypass Fable 5’s protections, a technique known as jailbreaking, prompting the model to identify software vulnerabilities and, in one case, produce code showing how a vulnerability could be exploited.
