VitaLink has revisited the “ultra-wide” computing idea once explored by Toshiba’s Satellite U845W, with its new foldable keyboard, once again combining portability with an unusually large workspace concept.
Like the previous Toshiba 21:9 experience, this device uses additional horizontal space for multitasking rather than the conventional proportions of a laptop.
Its 3,840 x 1,600 touchscreen adopts a 2.4:1 ratio, echoing ambitions that many considered premature when Toshiba tried similar ideas years earlier.
Revisiting an Abandoned Ultra-Large Idea
The resemblance to Toshiba’s previous approach seems deliberate, although VitaLink shifts the focus from media playback to productivity workloads and creative tasks.
When folded, VitaLink is 20 mm thick, weighs 1,200 grams and takes up barely more space than a large paperback novel.
Its CNC-machined aluminum body opens via a 180° hinge, creating a workspace measuring approximately 34 x 15 centimeters when extended.
This arrangement allows the screen to sit above the keyboard, giving the accessory a footprint comparable to that of many compact laptops.
Unlike many portable keyboards that sacrifice usability for compact dimensions, VitaLink uses 3.27mm key spacing and 0.8mm key travel.
The company says these measures improve comfort during long sessions, although broader testing remains necessary before such claims are settled.
The backlit keyboard supports three RGB lighting modes, ranging from static lighting to animated effects that prioritize appearance over practical utility.
The integrated display reaches 298 pixels per inch, covers 100% sRGB, and supports ten-point multitouch interaction for navigation purposes.
Toshiba’s 14.4-inch Satellite U845W attempted something similar in 2012, using a 1792×768 display built around a 21:9 aspect ratio.
This machine gained praise for multitasking and movie playback, although its unusual keyboard and proportions later limited wider commercial success.
More recently, Bapaco took another twist on the concept with a 12.3-inch 1920×720 touchscreen integrated into a keyboard computer.
Its unusual 16:6 layout demonstrated that manufacturers continued to revisit the same philosophy despite previous skepticism from the market at large.
A keyboard accessory trying to become more than one thing
This device has two USB-C connections supporting video, data, and charging at up to 65W via a single cable attached to another device.
Compatibility extends across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, tablets and handheld consoles without requiring additional software to be installed before operation begins.
When connected to another laptop, the accessory functions as a secondary display while simultaneously providing a full keyboard interface for work.
The company is also promoting it as a professional laptop companion where additional screen real estate could reduce reliance on external monitors.
When connected to gaming hardware via USB-C, the device effectively becomes an alternative to a portable 13-inch laptop-style display.
The device supports eight keyboard layouts, including Windows US, Mac US, German, Japanese, British, French, Nordic, Italian, and Spanish variants.
Additional layout fees range between $10 and $30, reflecting distinct engraving requirements and lower production quantities for manufacturing purposes.
VitaLink is crowdfunding on Kickstarter with a starting pledge of $299, below the listed retail figure of $658 for early supporters.
The campaign attracted 997 donors who pledged $325,523 despite an initial fundraising goal of just $3,825.
Shipping is scheduled for September 2026, with delivery charges ranging from $18 to $33 depending on destination and regional logistics.
