- PlayStation announced that it would not release games on physical discs starting in January 2028
- This comes days after GTA 6 pre-orders were digital or code-in-a-box orders only.
- The decision appears to pave the way for a digital-only PS6, likely available in 20-28 at the earliest
PlayStation announced today that no new PlayStation games will be released on physical disc starting in January 2028.
Dealing a major blow to the concept of physical ownership, the gaming giant said the move was “a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media far exceeds physical discs” in a new PS blog post.
He goes on to say that “This transition will allow us to more closely align with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today. »
The move is unlikely to be popular with fans and especially game collectors, and comes just days after the discless launch. GTA6 pre-orders, which saw Rockstar abandon the disc in favor of code-in-a-box game box versions.
Not only that, but this move also comes days after PlayStation removed from their libraries without compensation certain films that console owners had purchased digitally.
All of this points to an exclusively digital future, with a physical disc drive only being useful for games released before January 2028 on PlayStation. Sony’s next PlayStation console being digital-only by default now seems very likely.
We are a long way from Sony’s famous dunk on the PS4’s competitor, the Xbox One, at the start of the last generation of consoles, when the latter seemed to be announced with a function that would block the resale and sharing of physical games. Microsoft quickly rolled this back.
The less than 30-second video clip released by PlayStation has been viewed millions of times and is part of a series of famous PlayStation console “victories” over Microsoft in 2013 that set the stage for this generation – and beyond – and become part of video game folklore.
But now everything has changed. This decision will further challenge the concept of owning your own games, as publishers and platform holders simply retain the right and ability to unplug at will, with consumers not necessarily owning a copy of the game they purchased.
