FIFA World Cup betting picks for Spain, Portugal and Switzerland

Another day, another great program from the Futbol World Cup. I guess I can call it soccer, considering the tournament is mostly in America. Even though I don’t understand all the rules of football, it was fun to watch it. Similar to the World Baseball Classic and the Olympics, when every country cares, the games are simply more exciting. The United States is not known for being a soccer country, but we are all behind the men’s team.

Yesterday I played every game and I’m going to try to do it again. I lost when England allowed a goal to Congo, taking the total over 2.5, but I was right in saying England would score two goals or less. In the Belgium game we hit both teams to score, and a +230 winner if you bet on the 90 minute draw. I couldn’t find a winner for us in the USA match as I was betting on both teams’ goals. Team USA won 2-0 and Bosnia and Herzegovina couldn’t score despite a terrible red card that gave them a one-man advantage.

Spain vs. Austria

Spain is a pretty big favorite in this match. They are -360 on the three-way moneyline, with a draw being the second option, meaning Austria is very unlikely to win the match. To emphasize this point, Spain are -1000 to qualify and advance, meaning that if they go through overtime and penalties they still have a very strong chance of winning. In the group stage, Spain started with a disappointing draw against Cape Verde, then recorded two victories against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Austria won their opening match against Jordan, then lost 2-0 to Argentina and drew against Algeria. They don’t seem to be the most dynamic team in the tournament. I think Spain has an excellent defense and that will remain their strength here. I think they blanked Austria, give me a team total under 0.5.

Portugal vs Croatia

Portugal are also strong favorites to advance, but at only -300 they are not as much of a favorite as Spain. Most of the conversations I saw in Portugal were about Cristiano Ronaldo and how he was a problem for the team. He only scored in one of the three games, but scored twice in this game. Portugal hasn’t been great in this tournament either. They played two draws and one victory. Croatia doesn’t have the same star power, but they played well in the group stage. They lost 4-2 to England, but beat Panama and Ghana. I think there are two options for this game. I think we should see over 2.5 goals, but I really don’t like this bet. Portugal doesn’t look elite, so I can see it being a draw. I’ll put a smaller bet, but I’ll play this on a draw at +280 for the full 90 minutes.

Switzerland vs. Algeria

This is the closest game on the list in terms of lines for today’s list. Switzerland is -105 favorite to win, but those odds have dropped from -120, meaning people think the match should be closer. They began their World Cup campaign with a draw against Qatar before falling behind and beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1. Then, against Canada, they were able to win 2-1. Algeria went 1-1-1 in its three matches. They lost 3-0 to Argentina, one of the best teams in the tournament. They then beat Jordan 2-1, before drawing against Austria. Personally, I don’t see the love for Algeria. I think Switzerland is the best team. Algeria gave up goals to everyone. Maybe the Both Teams to Score at -125 bet is the best value, but I’ll take Switzerland to win in 90 minutes at -105.
