Jockey Frankie Dettori injured with broken ribs after car crash at Newmarket

A famous jockey suffers serious injuries after being involved in a car accident.

Frankie Dettori was involved in a “road accident” in Newmarket, England, on Wednesday evening, his team announced on social media.

The accident caused Dettori to suffer “several broken ribs and a broken thumb”.

“Another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Frankie was driving, causing it to spin and overturn…” the social media post said, adding that he was then taken to the hospital. “His injuries are still being assessed and he remains in hospital for further observation.

“Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended, as well as the doctors, nurses and medical team caring for him. He is now focused on rest and recovery. No further comment will be made until there is a significant update.”

The Sun said Dettori’s vehicle ended up upside down, although no arrests were made.

The Italian jockey, who had seven winners in seven races at Ascot in September 1996, has accumulated more than 3,350 victories during his career, mainly in England.

Dettori retired as a jockey after doing some racing in Brazil following a period of racing in the United States, Britain’s PA news agency reported. Before that, he lived for more than three decades in England.

He has entered this year’s Léger Legends race in Doncaster in September. It would be his first race in Britain since 2023.
