Avengers: Secret Wars is about to raise the curtain on Marvel’s wildly incoherent multiverse saga. And, although the highly anticipated film isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until December 17, 2027, some details about its plot, casting, and possible impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have already been confirmed by those involved in its production.
Lucky for you, I’ve rounded up the latest and greatest news about the sixth Avengers movie in this guide. So if you’re just looking forward to some news on what’s next for this year’s game Avengers: Apocalypseread on.
Avengers: Secret Wars release date
Avengers: Secret Wars will be shown in cinemas around the world on December 17, 2027.
Originally, it was supposed to release on May 7, 2027 – Marvel confirmed this during its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2024. However, in May 2025, Marvel announced doomsday And Secret Wars would be delayed by seven months. The first, which was to be released on May 1, 2026, will now be released on December 18, 2026, with Secret Wars debuting almost exactly a year later.
Marvel has never explained why their launches were pushed back. However, the scale of these productions, as well as criticism leveled at Marvel Studios over the varying quality of its Multiverse Saga projects, means they need as much development time as possible to be as good as we hope.
Avengers: Secret Wars trailer: is there one?
No, and we certainly won’t see any before Avengers: Apocalypse is released. After all, Marvel isn’t going to spoil what happens in the aforementioned film before we get to see it.
My best guess is that a brief teaser will premiere during Marvel’s Hall H panel at SDCC 2027, before a full trailer is revealed much closer to Avengers: Secret Wars‘release date. In short, we will wait a long time to see images.
Avengers: Secret Wars casting – confirmed and rumored
Avengers: Secret Wars“Casting has not been confirmed because – again – it would spoil who survives the events of Avengers: Apocalypse.
However, some actors have already spoiled the surprise by confirming their return in Avengers 6. In addition, some respected media outlets have also reported on other people who may appear in court. Potentially huge spoilers immediately follow Secret Warsso continue reading at your own risk:
- Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Victor von Doom
- Chris Evans as the original Steve Rogers/Captain America
- Chris Hemsworth as Thor
- Paul Bettany as Vision
- Simu Liu as Shang-Chi
- Letitia Wright as Shuri/Black Panther
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing
- Sadie Sink as TBC
It goes without saying that Downey Jr’s Doom will return. He’s the big bad of the multiverse saga’s two-part conclusion, so he’ll be back for round two.
Meanwhile, Evans confirmed he would take part in the proceedings during a video call with a fan. MCU serial leaker Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the Marvel film franchise, also let it slip that Hemsworth’s Thor would appear in Secret Wars.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Ben Grimm/The Thing, announced his involvement saying that filming would begin in August. So we will see at least one member of the Fantastic Four in Secret Wars. Speaking to people.com, Simu Liu also revealed that Shang-Chi was involved in Avengers 6while Letitia Wright told ScreenRant she would show up too.
Additionally, Paul Bettany told the Telegraph that he “had to Avengers homework” to complete, which all but confirms that he is part of the cast. Finally, rumors abound that Sadie Sink will have a role to play in Secret Wars after the debut of his mysterious character in Spider-Man: A Whole New Day.
There are sure to be more casting announcements, including confirmation that one of Marvel’s highest-grossing stars, Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker and his superhero alias Spider-Man, will appear (Attention : For what it’s worth, Holland has already announced he will be involved). Once more details about this entire film are revealed, I will update this section.
Avengers: Secret Wars story speculation
As expected, Marvel has not revealed Secret Wars‘ story synopsis again. Nonetheless, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have hinted at what we can expect.
For starters, the Russo brothers, who also run Secret Wars‘ predecessor – to learn more, find out everything we know so far about Avengers: Apocalypse – told me exclusively that they would “take inspiration” from both storylines in Marvel’s Secret Wars comic.
The literary duo, released in 1984 and 2015, share some narrative similarities (for example, both explore the Marvel multiverse), but primarily tell distinct stories. Expect the Russos to then select elements from both comic series to help tell their own original story.
Again, it’s unclear how his narrative will play out. However, this past March, a major leak of Marvel concept art emerged to give us a very first look at what could be coming in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The footage was only shown for a brief period before being taken offline, suggesting it was legitimate. That said, the vast majority of earlier artwork is never used in a film or TV show, so it’s possible that it was never used further during the development process.
On the recent rumor front, the final Marvel Phase 6 project will not be split in two. There was speculation that, given the importance and scale of the plot, as well as the number of characters that could be involved, Avengers: Secret Wars could become a duology in its own right. Marvel has been quiet about this, but many reliable industry insiders have denied this particular rumor since it first surfaced in February, so it’s very unlikely to happen.
Anyway, once Avengers 5 is published, we will have a clearer idea of what Secret Wars‘ that the plot will involve. In the meantime, the information above is the best information we have.
How will Avengers: Secret Wars impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The most likely scenario would involve some sort of reset of the MCU as we know it.
There’s no denying that Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut has become heavier and heavier with each phase. The introduction of more and more heroes and villains (not all of which have proven popular with audiences), as well as the laborious amount of homework required of viewers before watching any of Marvel’s new films in theaters or on TV shows on Disney+, means that a reboot of the comic book giant’s film franchise would be well received by die-hards and newcomers alike.
It looks like we’ll get that too. The Russos suggested that the next two Avengers films would be a “fresh start” for the MCU. Additionally, Marvel president Kevin Feige told Variety that the MCU 2.0 would return to a “singular timeline” that, among other things, would introduce viewers to an entirely new version of the X-Men, aka the comic titan’s famous mutant super-team.
It remains to be seen which established characters will make the leap to the new MCU, but I’d be surprised if fan favorites like Spider-Man aren’t among them. Add in the likely recasting of Black Panther, the continuation of the Fantastic Four, and the introduction of new heroes currently popular in Marvel Comics, and the MCU isn’t going anywhere soon after. Avengers: Secret Wars.
