According to Robert Pattinson, he found himself trapped in another chaotic on-screen love triangle in his latest blockbuster, The Odyssey.
Talk to MTV UK At the world premiere of Christopher Nolan’s action-fantasy epic in London, the actor spoke about his new villainous role.
When asked how fun it was to play a character that the audience wouldn’t really root for, Pattinson laughed at the idea, drawing an unexpected parallel with his famous past filmography.
“I think they will support him. I keep comparing… it’s a bit like Jacob in Dusk” Pattinson responded, jokingly referencing Taylor Lautner’s shapeshifting character from the wildly popular vampire romance franchise that initially launched his own global career.
In this grand cinematic retelling of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, the 40-year-old actor plays Antinous, the main antagonist who leads a ruthless group of aggressive suitors.
While King Odysseus is at war, Antinous spends his time relentlessly pressuring Queen Penelope to remarry.
Expanding on his brilliant logic with a witty quip, The drama The star playfully recontextualized the classic piece of literature for modern audiences.
“What The Odyssey it’s pretty much, Penelope just can’t decide between the two guys and I’m just trying to help her make a decision. … It feels like it’s good. He’s dead, get over it,” Pattinson joked.
While the ancient text of The Odyssey and the adolescent angst of Dusk clearly don’t share much in common, the actor was obviously drawing parallels with Jacob’s incessant, fan-favorite attempts to convince Bella Swan of his own character, Edward Cullen, throughout the multi-film saga.
