FIFA has imposed suspensions on at least two key members of the U.S. Soccer Federation ahead of Monday’s World Cup match against Belgium, according to multiple reports.
ESPN reported that team manager Sam Zapatka and U.S. Soccer Federation vice president of security Frank Pannell were the two personnel excluded from the game. The United States then suffered a 4-1 defeat against Belgium, ending their run in the 2026 World Cup.
The tournament governing body provided no reason for the suspensions.

ESPN, citing sources, also reported that the suspensions were likely related to incidents during the U.S. team’s victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina last week in the round of 16. The alleged violations involved FIFA match protocols and individuals being able to enter restricted areas. There were no known physical altercations.

After joining the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2015, Zapatka was named the team’s administrative director in 2020.
Although US Soccer did not reveal the reasons for the suspensions, it emphasized Tuesday that they were not related to the appeal process surrounding the one-match suspension of star striker Folarin Balogun for a red card.

Belgium contested FIFA’s decision to lift Balogun’s suspension, but the governing body ultimately upheld its original decision, allowing the Team USA forward to take the field.
President Donald Trump said Monday he watched the controversial match and later called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the red card.
“I spoke with Gianni,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

“All I did was ask for a review, because I didn’t think it was wrong,” the president said. “And again, I’m good at it. I didn’t think it was a foul. I thought it was two great athletes crashing and tangling.”
