For about four years, Scottie Scheffler’s death, taxes and success were among the few things you could count on.

Until Friday.

For the first time since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Scheffler missed the cut at the Scottish Open, ending a streak of 78 cuts made. It is the longest streak on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods set the record with 142 consecutive cuts from February 1998 to May 2005.

Scheffler finished two shots outside the cut line after shooting a 2-over 72 on Friday to finish in a tie for the tournament. The 30-year-old was blunt in his assessment of his game.

“I got off to a bad start and after that I didn’t really get close enough to get a few looks,” Scheffler said. “That’s how you shoot over par.”

The seeding of the top 65 and ties was not official until the second round was completed. Scheffler was tied for 88th when he missed a 6-foot par-3 putt at the par-3 ninth to fall back into a tie at 142.

Scheffler will be looking to turn the page quickly, as next week he will attempt to defend his title at the Open Championship. The 154th Open will be played at Birkdale and Scheffler did not play the Links course.

“It’s a little different than I expected,” Scheffler said. “Find out how I can go down to Birkdale and go from there.”

Scheffler was just three shots off the lead to start the day, but he struggled with the putter. He missed a 3 1/2-foot par putt at No. 11, his second hole. At the par-5 12th, his chip out of the tall grass to a back pin caught a crest and rolled into a bunker, leading to a second straight bogey.

Xander Schauffele saw his 72-game cutting streak end at Torrey Pines in January. The longest active streak now belongs to Matt Fitzpatrick with 29 consecutive.
