Defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks may struggle to match last season

When baseball season started, I studied each baseball team in depth before opening day. I gave an overview of the betting and discussed the additions for each team. Believe it or not, we’re about two months away from the start of football season. So, I’m going to do this for each of the NFL teams. I’ll start with last year’s records, and we’ll start with the Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks.

Last year

The discussion around Sam Darnold’s career has completely changed. Two years ago it was considered a fiasco. Now he will live forever as a Super Bowl champion. Seattle beat the Patriots 29-13 in one of the most boring Super Bowl games in recent memory. Getting to the Super Bowl has been a tough road — at least in the NFC Championship Game. The Seahawks had to survive a back-and-forth battle against the Rams and won the game 31-27. They destroyed the 49ers in a comical game. Basically, from the opening kickoff, they embarrassed San Francisco, winning 41-6. Overall, the team went 14-3 and looked like the best team in football.

Off-season additions and subtractions

One of the biggest subtractions was the trade of Kenneth Walker III to the Chiefs. Walker was the Super Bowl MVP, but there are other good running backs available in their room. They also lost some key pieces of their defense. The one who may be the hardest to replace is Klint Kubiak, who is now the head coach of the Raiders. They did, however, extend some key elements. They extended Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Charles Cross and Derick Hall.

List

I think it’s hard to count on a team that has Sam Darnold and Smith-Njigba. Zach Charbonnet, injured in the playoffs, is now the Seahawks’ primary guard. Even without Kubiak, they should still have a solid offense with their wide receiver corps. Smith-Njigba could (again) be a top-three wide receiver, Cooper Kupp is one of the best veterans available, and Shaheed is a very solid third receiver. AJ Barner is also a solid tight end option, even if he isn’t one of the top options in the league. This defense was stronger than expected last season. They lost a few pieces, so I think they’ll be a little worse, but they still have a lot of their key players.

The line on the Seahawks took them from 14 wins to just 10.5 as a team total. I wouldn’t be too surprised if the Seahawks take a step back. Winning again after the Super Bowl is difficult. The Rams are better, the 49ers are probably better and even the Cardinals should be better. So naturally, the Rams will take a step back. I don’t like the under 10.5, but I definitely won’t play the over. At -225, the playoff-bound Seahawks have also lost value. If I were to play anything I would go below 10.5 since I have them at 10 wins, but this is a game I would stay away from.
