Spain’s road to the World Cup final
Spain opened the group stage with a scoreless draw against Cape Verde, then reeled off six straight victories to reach the final. He beat Austria 3-0 in the round of 16, then beat Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16 to send Cristiano Ronaldo home. Spain eventually conceded in the quarterfinals, but Mikel Merino scored his second consecutive goal in a 2–1 victory over Belgium, the only goal allowed by Spain during the entire tournament.

Argentina’s road to the World Cup final
Argentina had a perfect record until the final, even if nothing in the reigning champions’ journey was easy. It opened Group J with defeats to Algeria and Austria before closing out the group stage with a 3–1 victory over Jordan. From there, Argentina needed overtime three times in a row: a 3-2 win over Cape Verde in the round of 16, a 3-2 win over Egypt in the round of 16, and a 3-1 win over Switzerland in the quarterfinals. She booked her ticket to the final by beating England, 2-1, in the semi-final on Wednesday.
