Private Internet Access (PIA) has just announced the rollout of network infrastructure updates to parts of its system and is asking users to update their applications to take full advantage of them.
The changes are less about flashy new features and more about plumbing: routing, capacity and the everyday reliability of staying connected. PIA says the latest versions of the app include logic designed to work with the upgraded backend as it rolls out on a region-by-region basis.
This announcement comes after a long period of silence from PIA. It has been 2024 since the provider released a substantial update to its application.
While it remains a solid choice among the best VPN services thanks to rock-bottom pricing, deep customization, and a repeatedly audited no-logging record, its rate of visible improvement lagged behind competitors like NordVPN and Surfshark.
What PIA really changes
As described in a blog post, the update focuses on three practical improvements.
The first is smarter automatic reconnections. PIA teams regularly take VPN servers offline for maintenance, and older versions of apps sometimes left users with dropped connections or manual reconnections. Updated logic is designed to facilitate maintenance and reduce avoidable downtime.
The second targets a persistent complaint from users: CAPTCHA. Since large VPNs funnel many people through shared IP addresses, websites often report this traffic and generate endless verification prompts.
The company says it has made changes to routing and IP management to distribute traffic more evenly, which could reduce these challenges, although a site’s decision whether or not to throw a CAPTCHA at you is ultimately out of PIA’s control.
The third improvement concerns location accuracy. PIA has updated parts of its location data so that selected locations more accurately align with your chosen region, meaning more relevant local search results and other regional content.
A gradual deployment
These upgrades don’t arrive everywhere at the same time. PIA describes the rollout as gradual, with some locations already on the new platform and others still being migrated.
That’s why he encourages everyone to update now, because keeping your app up to date ensures that you’ll benefit as soon as the improvements arrive in your region.
The latest versions cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and tvOS, available via the App Store, Google Play or as a direct download from the PIA website.
Does he respond to criticism?
Such a substantial update constitutes a significant, if measured, step forward in the PIA. However, this does not touch on the areas where PIA has slipped the most against its rivals. These include raw speed – where our latest tests saw a notable drop – and streaming unblocking, which has become more inconsistent.
That said, the provider’s key strengths remain intact, including its large US server footprint, open source applications, port forwarding, and a no-logging policy that Deloitte has now verified through three audits.
For existing subscribers, the solution is simple: update the app for more stable connections and possibly fewer verification loops.
For anyone comparing PIA to the competition, these updates smooth out some rough edges without changing the broader calculus. It remains one of the most customizable and best value VPNs, but it still has some catching up to do in terms of speed.
