Perhaps one of the funniest celebrations in all of baseball just helped the Los Angeles Angels break a 100-plus game streak Monday night.
For the first time in their last 106 games, the Angels won a game while trailing in the ninth inning, according to ESPN. And their fan base had specific cheers to help propel their team to a walk-off win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
It’s called the “tarps off” cheer, and it’s become a real movement this season. Simply put, fans take off their jerseys and wave them in a specific section of the field, and that was right field at Angel Stadium on Monday night.

Hundreds of fans were seen waving their jerseys and cheering on their team, which was trailing 2-1 when spotted in the top of the eighth inning.
The rabid cheering section would continue until the bottom of the ninth when Jo Adell came to the plate with the bases loaded and a tying game with a chance to get out.
Perhaps it was the “take the tarps off” move that got to the Cardinals pitcher, as he dove Adell and allowed Zach Neto to trot to home plate for the winning run.
It’s also something the Cardinals fan base has made famous this season, as Busch Stadium has become the hotbed for some jerseyless game celebrations.

On May 15, the Cardinals were playing the Kansas City Royals when fans were seen in the stands cheering. It’s even something Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said he urged him to buy tickets for for fans who wanted to attend.
However, Angels fans have given these Cardinals faithful a taste of their own medicine, and it’s something they’ve been using since May as well.
And the movement has also become a fan protest group, as “Sell the team” has been chanted numerous times from the right field seats this season. Angels owner Arte Moreno has been criticized because the team hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2014.

The Angels are once again at the bottom of the AL West standings, owning a 40-61 record despite winning 3-2 on Monday night. They sit 11 games out of the division lead.
