Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed General Aamer Raza as commander of the National Strategic Command. He was previously the Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the prime minister promoted General Raza from the rank of lieutenant general to the rank of “four-star general” and simultaneously appointed him to the coveted post.
“The Prime Minister congratulated General Aamer Raza, HI(M), SBt on his promotion and appointment, wishing him all the best in assuming this important responsibility,” the statement added.
The new title was created after the passage of the Pakistan Army, Air Force and Navy (Amendment) Bills, 2025. Field Marshal Asim Munir was also appointed as chief of defense forces under the same legislation.
The National Strategic Command Post Commander was created after the removal of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCSC) — General Shamshad Mirza was the last to hold the post.
The law states that the Prime Minister can appoint the commander from among the serving generals of the Pakistan Army for a term of three years, based on the recommendation of the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces.
