Hundreds of Howard University freshmen took the internet by storm, reacting with outrage over opt-outs days before they were due to enter.
Howard students protested on social media, expressing their agony and heartbreak after being informed by email of the decision.
Howard University sent the notice on Wednesday, July 22, which said: “Due to this missed deadline, we can no longer hold your place in Howard University’s incoming class.”
Howard served the notices to freshmen who could not pay their tuition by the July 10 deadline.
The decision comes after Howard completed registration for the fall 2026 academic session, which begins Aug. 17.
Howard University’s spokesperson commented on the situation in a statement to CBS affiliate WUSA9, saying, “We understand that the enrollment update that was released yesterday is difficult and disappointing. »
“The school says it has been informing students and families about the registration process since March.”
According to the university, the cases are under review, adding that it will “consider relevant circumstances presented regarding pending scholarships and financial aid resources.”
The university spokesperson, however, did not specify the exact number of students affected.
