Charli XCX released her seventh studio album, Music, fashion, cinemamarking its first full sequel to the genre-defining film in 2024 Kid.
The 11-track album, available now via Atlantic Records, includes previously released singles. Rock music, SS26, Wink And Cameraand ends with Nobody lasts foreverwith a monologue by director David Cronenberg.
Talk to rolling stone Ahead of the release, Charli described her instinct to walk away from what made her Kid such a phenomenon rather than trying to reproduce it.
“All my albums work in oppositions,” she said.
“They push against each other, and that’s the connective tissue. I knew when I made it that I would never make this record again. It’s not creatively rewarding for me to do the same thing twice.”
The album arrives after a typically busy 18 months for the singer, who released a soundtrack album for Wuthering Heightsstarred in the mockumentary The momentand continued to roll out new content and appearances at a steady pace.
In one of the film’s most memorable moments referenced by critics, Kylie Jenner’s fictional appearance in The moment tells Charli’s character, “The second time people get sick of you, that’s when you have to go even harder,” a line that Charli’s recent string of outings seems to follow, whether read as sincere or tongue-in-cheek.
The album cover features three characters chosen to represent its title, each from a different creative field: musician John Cale, fashion designer Marc Jacobs and director Martin Scorsese, photographed together in a kitchen.
Speaking about being approached for the shoot, Cale described the invitation as typically spontaneous: “She said she had an idea for me. We were talking about a video, an ode to an imprint of time and place. Then I was on a plane.”
Music, fashion, cinema is Charli’s fourth full-length album in just over two years.
