Chuck Russell, the director behind The mask, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors And The Scorpion Kingdied at age 74.
He was found unresponsive at his San Diego-area home Wednesday and his death was confirmed by his attorney; according to TMZlocal firefighters had responded to a report of an unconscious man.
Russell began his career writing screenplays and working as a production manager and assistant director on independent films.
He met longtime collaborator Frank Darabont while serving as executive producer on Hell’s nightand later wrote the screenplay for the Dennis Quaid thriller Dream landscape.
He made his directorial debut with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriorswhich revived the franchise, surpassed its two predecessors and helped launch the career of Patricia Arquette.
He followed this with the cult remake of Gout.
Russell’s greatest commercial success came in 1994 with The maskwhich featured Cameron Diaz in his first film role and made Jim Carrey a household name, the film went on to earn an Academy Award nomination for visual effects.
He continued to make major studio films over the next decade, including Eraser with Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Scorpion Kingwhich gave Dwayne Johnson his first starring role.
After a long break from cinema, Russell returned to directing with I am anger with John Travolta, the Indian action film JungleAnd Paradise city with Bruce Willis and Travolta.
In 2024, he is making a remake of Witches paintingtelling Variety when his approach to genre cinema was character-centered: “We have to humanize these things, whether it’s action, comedy or drama. You have to get into the heads of your performers. You need to incorporate their true personality into their performance.
