Another 1-1 day in the books for us like yesterday was one of the most interesting results we’ve had. I had two unders in two separate matches. One of them involved Tarik Skubal and Trevor Rogers, who should be screaming underneath. The Tigers jumped Rogers and led 7-0 at one point. If the match was final, we would have won this bet. Instead, the teams combined to score 19 points, erasing my total. Well, it’s better than losing a heartbreaker.
The Boston Red Sox experienced one of the hottest periods in franchise history. Given that they’ve been around for over 100 years, that should give you some context. This period has taken them from sellers at the trade deadline to potential buyers, and potentially a playoff team. I really don’t know what the problem was early in the season for Boston, or what caused the turnaround. Their pitching and hitting numbers are strong, so maybe it was only a matter of time before everything went well.

Today they are releasing Sonny Gray, someone who probably would have fetched them a big return, but who will now be the focal point of their rotation if they make the playoffs. Gray has been good for years, but this season is his best since 2023 or maybe 2019. He is 12-2 with a 2.78 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He originally threw better at home than on the road, but that has stabilized. He has had a quality start in each of his last six road starts. He hasn’t faced the Athletics this season, but they are 8-for-29 against him overall.

The Athletics have one of the worst records in baseball since June 11th. This reminds me a little of last year when they lost about 20 of 21 games. The team isn’t that bad, but the plan for this team has never been great this season. They are building for their arrival in Las Vegas. There are some talented players on the roster, but they are likely to make moves for the future in the coming days. They’ve already called up Tommy White, one of their highest drafted picks, and he’s looked great so far, so they’ve already started a youth movement.

The books list Mason Barnett as the starting pitcher for the game. This will be the right-hander’s first start this season. For the year, he has a 4.74 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. The Athletics have used him in a variety of ways out of the bullpen this year. He has a few stops; he also pitched four innings in one outing. He struggled in July, allowing 11 earned runs in 9.1 innings, and the Athletics lost every game he played.

Tonight should be no different; the Red Sox are clearly the better team in this game, and they definitely have the better pitcher. Boston has the best ERA in baseball and the Athletics have the worst bullpen in baseball. Telling you to take a team at -185 isn’t really that hard to do, so I’ll tell you that the run line is more visible. The Red Sox have only played 23 one-run games, and the Athletics have only played 29. Give me the Red Sox running line.
