Six months after the alleged kidnapping of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the investigation remains active, with authorities and the FBI working to solve the case, even as a public dispute emerges over the investigation’s early handling.
According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the investigation is ongoing and analysis of DNA and digital evidence is still underway.
In a recent development, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos pushed back on FBI Director Kash Patel’s recent claims that his agency was kept out of the investigation for four critical days.
Nanos pointed out that the FBI had been there since “day one” and criticized Patel for being “misinformed.”
Earlier, Patel told media that local authorities sent the evidence to a private lab in Florida rather than the FBI’s Quantico facility, a decision he said cost him valuable time. But Nanos maintains the evidence was handled properly and has rejected allegations of jurisdictional friction.
Guthrie’s story made national headlines because she is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, a “Today” show co-anchor who pleaded for her mother’s safe release. A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the criminals.
“Pack, who followed the story very closely, claims that the two men were amateur kidnappers with no plans other than to kidnap his mother,” he explained. “When it didn’t go the way they hoped and, I believe, quickly, they had no backup plan,” Pack continued, encouraging people to rewatch the footage released in early February.
