Licensed incidents disrupt fragile peace in Kurram

Dera Ismail Khan:

Friday, two consecutive shooting incidents disrupted fragile peace in Kurram, aggravating the challenges facing local residents who have already undergone four months of road closings and shortages of food and medical supplies, according to officials and former tribal.

The troubles began when individuals working in a field in the Higher Kurram Bushehra region were dismissed by a rival group. Two people, Gul Ali Turi and Abbas Ali, were injured during the attack and taken to the district headquarters (DHQ) to paralate.

After the shooting, an exchange of shots broke out between the rival groups, the two sides using heavy automatic weapons. The authorities quickly intervened, short-circuiting a ceasefire and deployment of the police and other staff members to prevent a new escalation.

However, during the deployment process, according to Tribal Chef Shafiq Turi, another shooting incident occurred in which five people suffered from bullet injuries. The wounded included Kurram’s deputy commissioner (AC) Saeed Manan, who went there to control the situation.

Manan was transported urgently to DHQ hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery. The medical superintendent, Dr. Syed Mir Hassan Jan, said that Manan had been shot in his stomach, therefore, surgery was necessary. He added that after surgery, Manan was transported by plane to Peshawar via a helicopter.

Later in the day, a rival jirga met in Kohat with the great Aman Jirga to discuss the means of establishing permanent peace in the district. The Jirga decided to train committees, including representatives of the rival parties to implement the peace agreement signed earlier in January.
