- Globe Life was hit by a cyber attack in the summer of 2024, which affected thousands of users
- The investigation has now determined that the attack affected more than 850,000 victims
- The attackers tried to extort the company for money
The US insurance company Globe Life claims that around 855,000 people have now been affected by the Ransomware attack which she recently suffered.
In mid-June 2024, the company reported a cybersecurity incident in which unknown third parties have accessed data from sensitive customers via one of its web portals. In an 8-K form filed with the SEC at the time, Globe Life said that Crooks had accessed sensitive data on at least 5,000 customers, but stressed that the final number, confirmed after an in-depth survey, is probably much more important.
The new survey has now said that “around 850,000 additional people” have been affected, the anonymous authors flying the names of the people, the email addresses, the telephone numbers, the postal addresses and, in some cases, the dates of Birth, social security numbers, health data and other information on insurance policy – but fortunately, financial information has not been stolen.
No payment
Globe Life said that the attackers had tried to extort money for stolen data, but failed.
“The company has not paid the payment of extortion requested and rather informed the federal police and continues to help the police in the investigation into this activity,” said Globe Life in His latest report.
“The company has launched the notification process and credit supervision services for these people.”
Although the crooks requested ransom payment for data, they did not locate the systems or delete the affected systems files. Consequently, the violation had no impact on the operations of the company, underlined Globe Life. Therefore, it does not expect the attack to have a significant impact on its activities. The costs and expenses resulting from this attack will be covered by insurance.
Globe Life is one of the largest life insurance and health insurance providers in the United States, with an annual turnover of more than $ 5 billion.
