- Apple says you can prevent your MacBook from turning automatically
- This occurs normally when you open the cover or connect the power cable
- The terminal -based solution is aimed at more advanced users
This has been a familiar part of the possession of one of the best MacBook for years: open the cover or connect your charger when it is off and your laptop starts automatically, without you having to press the button food. But this situation does not work for everyone, and Apple has now explained how you can get around this behavior if you wish.
In a new assistance document, Apple explains the deactivation process of this functionality. Once disabled, your MacBook will only take care of when you press a button or trackpad.
That said, this is not a particularly simple process – there is no rocking to modify in the Settings application, for example. It is therefore probably more a power user solution than anything else.
According to the assistance document, you will first need to make sure that your Mac has an Apple Silicon chip and executes MacOS Sequoia or later. Then, open the terminal application (located in the utility folder) and type one of the following commands, then press Back:
- To prevent your laptop from lighting up when you open the cover or connect the power cable, type sudo nvram bootpreference =% 00
- To prevent the laptop from starting only when you open the cover, type sudo nvram bootpreference =% 01
- Or to prevent starting only when you connect the power cable, type sudo nvram bootpreference =% 02
Finally, enter your administrator’s password and press Back. To cancel orders and restore your MacBook in its previous way of working, just type Sudo Nvram -d Bootpreference And press Back.
Power user correction
This gives you some options to customize the starting behavior of your MacBook as you wish. Although this is not the simplest fix, it gives you at least a little more control on your laptop. With automatic starting, your MacBook should only be loaded if you press a key or trackpad.
Why would you like to prevent your MacBook from starting when you open the cover? You may just want to inspect your laptop, for example, or take photos if you want to sell it. Bringing it up when you open the lid means that you should then deactivate it, something you wouldn’t need to worry if you could just deactivate this behavior in the first place.
As always with the terminal, be sure to know what you do before you start entering orders. If you do, it could be a useful way to take a little more control over the operation of your MacBook.
