The Hague: A guest in a Dutch hotel by the sea obtained more than she had negotiated when she opened her room to find a large gray seal kipping on the ground.
Surprised staff called an animal association in Vlissingen, in the south of the Netherlands, who said it was an unusual call even if he often gets bizarre requests.
“It was a strange spectacle, the guests standing nervously outside and the completely cooled seal sleeping inside,” said the association on its Facebook page, with photos.
The seal had become “pretty grumpy due to its sleep of disturbed beauty” and the animal rescue team placed it in a special basket to move it to a more usual habitat near the beach, added the group.
Despite their relatively placid appearance, the seals can become aggressive and bite if they are provoked, warned the association.
The employee of the Valentijn Damen hotel told local media Omroep Zeeland: “Just when you think you’ve seen everything, something like that happens”.
Damen said the woman had no grudge after recovering her room.
“She found all this a fascinating experience. It is also her birthday today, so she thought it was a nice gift.”
