- Nikon announces Z-Ment versions of the Red V-Raptor and Red Komodo
- The Nikkor Z 28-135 mm f / 4 Pz lens was launched simultaneously
- Since Nikon’s red control, we have seen permanent price reductions for certain red cameras
Nikon’s red takeover is fully, after the launch of two red cinema cameras with the Nikon Z-Mount; The red v-raptor and the red komodo. The Z-Ment versions were also launched alongside the new Nikon cinema lens, the Nikkor Z 28-135 mm f / 4 Pz.
Nikon instantly became a major actor in cinema cameras when she acquired red digital cameras in March 2024, and it took us less than a year to see the fruit of control, with Z-Z-Z versions Mount of two cameras of Ciné Red Super Popular in the film industry.
It is a Sucker punch for Canon – the Red Komodo 6K was previously only available with RF -Mount de Canon, but its future is now firmly at the Nikon camp. There will be various objective assembly adapters available, including Nikon Z to Nikon F and Nikon Z to PL, but the future of Red is moving away from canon lenses.
In addition, the Nikon effect extended to the pricing of the red camera, the name of the Cine cameras manufacturer, and Nikon’s own cameras benefit from Red Tech. Let’s take a look at what happened.
The Nikon effect is in full swing, and I expect more
In itself, there is little new in the Z-Mount versions of the V-Raptor and Komodo Rouges, in addition to the lens and what Nikon says, these are improved autofocus capacities. The biggest impact is direct compatibility with the Nikon Z-Ment objectives, of which there are many, and which now includes the Nikkor Z 28-135 mm f / 4 Pz-a versatile zoom adapted to a gimbal with features Cine which costs $ 2596.95 / 2499 £ 2499 and has a date of start of sale of April 2025 (Australian price and TBC availability).
What is even more exciting, in particular for independent filmmakers, is Nikon which reduces the prices of the Red Komodo 6K packages. In September 2024, we saw permanent price discounts of up to $ 3,000 – for example, the Komodo 6K cameras production pack is now $ 11,995 (was $ 14,995). Still not cheap, but more affordable for pros. Price for the Komodo 6K red with Z-Ment starts at $ 6,995 (around £ 5,600), while the V-Rapor Red 8K costs $ 29,995 (around £ 24,000-converted from the USD) .
Nikon has also officially removed the name of its subsidiary, red digital cameras at Simply Red, which most people call it anyway.
In the other direction, Nikon cameras benefit from Red Tech. In September 2024, four Red Luts color profiles were made available to Nikon’s current mirror cameras, including the Nikon Z6 III, Nikon Z8 and Nikon ZF, and even certain digital SLRs like the D780. Nikon’s N-LOG video sequences can now be stylized in color Rec. 709 using one of the biases of Red films, the bleaching of film bias, the bias of the film and the profiles of achromic colors co-developed with the colorist of the cinema Eric Weidt.
I don’t expect the Nikon effect to stop here either. What do you think – what are the most exciting developments that we can expect from Nikon’s red taking? Better video features in Nikon’s mirror -free cameras? More cinematographic objectives Z? Let me know in the comments below.
