- It does not expect a significant financial impact
- The sarcoma has taken responsibility, saying that they have also stolen sensitive data
Unimicron, a global manufacturing giant specializing in printed circuits (PCB), confirmed the suffering of a ransomware attack, lodging a new report to the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), revealing that he was hit the January 30.
As soon as the attack was spotted, the company said that it called on a team from Cyber-Jumelle Tierce to analyze and defend the computer infrastructure, adding that the possible loss or impact was “limited” . Nor does he expect to receive compensation from his insurance company for the attack.
“The company will continue to improve network security control and the information infrastructure to guarantee information security,” concluded the PCB manufacturer.
State financing
The company did not say who attacked it, if it had lost sensitive data, or what are ransom requests, but Bleeping Compompute Signals a ransomware operation called “sarcoma” was behind the incident.
Apparently, the group has published samples of stolen files and threatened to free everything unless the payment is made. They claim to have stolen 377 GB of SQL files and documents.
The sarcoma is a relatively unknown name whose operations started only a few months ago. However, the publication claims that it has already struck 36 victims, which makes it very active and quite destructive. One of his first victims seems to have been Earthworks Group, a large construction and environmental service company.
Unimicron is one of the world leaders in rigid PCBs, flexible print circuits, high density interconnection cards (HDI), rigid cards and integrated circuit carriers (CI). These products are an integral part of various applications such as LCD monitors, PCs, laptops, network cards, faxes, scanners, mobile phones and personal digital assistants.
The company operates manufacturing facilities and service centers in Taiwan, China, Germany and Japan. In terms of financial performance, Unimicron declared a turnover of approximately $ 3.29 billion in 2023.
