Year after year, more and more people around the world are turning to VPN software to claim their online confidentiality and get around Internet geo-restaurants. However, not all services are rendered. Now, Obscura VPN, a new supplier on the market, has launched a challenge to the entire industry and promises to “establish the standard for the next generation of VPN”.
Obscura VPN was officially launched on February 11, 2025, and essentially promises to do two things better than its competitors: being “deprived by design” and “surpass internet restrictions”.
The VPN is only available for macOS at the time of writing. The management of other platforms is defined in the future.
Two VPNs, better than one?
According to the founder of Obscura VPN, Carl Dong, today’s VPN industry is delivered with considerable faults, the greatest being the confidence of suppliers.
In a blog, he said: “Basically, the biggest defect in existing VPN companies is that they act as your main man in the community – see both your personal information (IP connection, e -mail, invoicing address , etc.) And Your navigation story. “”
Dong’s opinion, even VPN without log-log is not a complete solution because, even a supplier who remains faithful to his promise, “may undergo a security violation and be compromised”.
We have asked Dong more clarifications on these points as well as for his point of view on independent audits of non-locks, but still awaits us an answer at the time of publication.
What is important to know for the moment is that Obscura VPN has decided to take a different route to be more “private by design”. VPN traffic is released through two different jumps. However, unlike traditional multi-hop VPNs, each of these servers is managed independently by two different VPN suppliers.
Today, we are announcing a partnership with Obscura VPN, a newly launched VPN Bipartite service that uses our Wireguard VPN servers as “Exit Hop”. Read more here: https://t.co/bxwn9houh5February 11, 2025
To do this, Obscura VPN has teamed up with one of the most secure VPNs on the market, Mullvad VPN.
Obscura servers act as the entrance jump that encrypts your Internet connection via the Wireguard protocol to relay it later to the exit servers by Mullvad. It is then the second VPN supplier (Mullvad) which technically connects you to the Internet.
“It divides” who you are “what you do”, which means that none of the parties can link your identity to your navigation, “explains Dong.
Obscura VPN says, in fact, that he can never decipher your traffic. On the side, Mullvad should not be able to see your personal information related to your account either.
In addition, Obscura VPN does not require your name, your email, your telephone address or any credit card information to register, by reducing the amount of data from collected users.
New censorship -resistant technology
As mentioned earlier, the obscura VPN also promises to be better than its competitors to bypass censorship and escape the VPN blocks. To achieve this, he uses anyone (Quick UDP Internet Connections), a new Internet protocol designed for maximum safety and speed.
According to Dong, the one is better than current VPN darking technologies because it mixes normal internet traffic while avoiding performance problems that could affect TCP (transmission control protocol) connections.
Beyond the technical details, many VPN suppliers continue to invest in their characteristics resistant to censorship to stay ahead of the game against the always sophisticated censors.
NordVPN, for example, recently published its new Nordwhisper resistant censorship protocol that uses web tunnel technology designed to imitate normal web traffic. Proton VPN also unveiled some major updates from its service during the summer in order to double its fight against censorship, including the support of its own stealth VPN protocol on Windows.
Although only time will tell us if the obscura VPN can really surpass difficult censorship better than its competitors, it is really interesting to see another solution develop in this space.
Today is the day: Obscura VPN is now available! @OBSCURAVPN is the first VPN which: – Impossible to connect your activity by design – Outstands Network Filters, we believe that obscura establishes the standard for a new generation of VPN, and hope that you will verify that you will verify that you will check that you will check that You will check that you will check it out! 👇 Links + Plus in the thread pic.twitter.com/biqbwxhavmFebruary 11, 2025
Currently, Obscura VPN only offers its supplier as Mac VPN – it means that if you use different devices, you will have to wait a little longer before you can test it.
The server network is also quite thin compared to other VPN suppliers. These include some places between Canada and the United States, some European countries (France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and United Kingdom), and less than a handful in Asia (Japan, Singapore and Turkey). Again, the team would soon work to add more locations.
You can subscribe to a reduced rate at the moment of $ 6 per month, instead of the regular cost of $ 8.
Although it is too early to say that if obscura will end up reaching its place among the best VPN applications, it should be mentioned that the software is completely open-source. This means that anyone with technical knowledge can lift the hood and take a look at their code to see if they really do what they claim.
