Washington: US President Donald Trump has created a new energy council to respond to growing electricity demands, aimed at strengthening the country’s position in its rivalry of artificial intelligence with China.
“We are going to be dominant to energy like no one else, and that does not even cover all the electricity that we are going to produce for all AI factories,” Trump told journalists when he signed the ‘order.
“They need at least double the electricity that we have right now,” he added.
Trump’s interior secretary, Doug Burgum, who also attended the signing, said: “The United States is in an AI arms race with China. The only way we win is with more electricity. “
According to the White House, the Council will coordinate the energy policy between federal agencies and will rationalize the permits, production and distribution of various energy resources.
This decision is aligned with the promise of Trump’s campaign to “drill, baby, forest”, stimulating domestic oil and gas production and reversing all the Biden administration concerns on carbon emissions or impact on climate change.
The objective is also to counter the potential costs of the rise in Trump’s trade wars, which could see energy prices increase once energy imports or American exports are affected by prices.
The requirements of the AI industry for electrical energy are acute, the data servers already putting strong pressure on the overloaded electricity supply of the country.
The supply of electrical energy in the United States has suffered from chronic underinvestment, exacerbated by aging nuclear power plants offline.
Technological CEOs have put pressure on Trump administration intensely to focus on the need to be able to respond to their AI requests.
As early as 2028, managers expect technological companies to have five -gigawatts training requirements – enough to feed around five million houses.
