Bureaucratic hedges of the Mpas flag

Lahore:

Members of the Southern Punjab Provincial Assembly have raised concerns about the indifferent and lethargic attitude of local bureaucrats while congratulating the performance of the chief minister.

The legislators shared their complaints at a meeting with President PML-N Nawaz Sharif and chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday.

Nawaz, accompanied by his daughter, met Mpas from Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Muzaffargarh, followed by another session with legislators from Layyah, Rajanpur and DG Khan.

The discussions opened with a speech by Nawaz Sharif, which has talked about the political challenges at length that the party is confronted and the current state.

Following his speech, the AMPs were invited to share their comments, many of which praising Maryam and informing her father that government initiatives had been well received in their constituencies.

They particularly congratulated his approach based on the merit of administrative appointments, one of them stressing that all the government officers in Punjab were named only to merit, without influence of “sifarish” (or recommendation) – Euphemism for an undue favor.

He noted that, unlike the past, when the influential amps had control of transfers and publications, the current government had eliminated such practices and legislators gradually accepted change.

However, concerns have also been raised regarding the attitude of government representatives.

An MPA said that if the government appoints officers, it must also be held responsible for their performance. He revealed that even CM Maryam recognized the concerns, telling his father that the situation was not as fluid as civil servants represented.

She admitted that she was not satisfied with the situation of the law and order in the south of Punjab.
