The beginnings of XAI of the Grok 3 AI model allowed CEO Elon Musk and his team to show the power of the last iteration of Grok. However, what happens to the Grok 2 model. While Grok 3 is exclusive to Premium + subscribers on X, Grok 2 will be even more accessible than before, because it will soon be open-source.
Grok 2 was the default model for each Grok user, but the underlying engine will now have a chance to spread much further. Usually, the AI models of large companies are locked. You have access to it via paid subscriptions, and you can use them, but you cannot really see how they work or modify them to meet your specific needs. GROK 2 Open-Source means that developers will be able to dig in its code and customize it for use in completely new applications.
However, how clear the open source version of Grok 2 will not be clear. Sometimes companies say that open source even when they retain or hold at least a little from their owner work. However, Grok 2 is likely to have a second life in the hands of an open source community which can modify and experiment it.
Despite its name, Openai moved away from open-source. Its most powerful models remain owners. GPT-4, for example, remains locked, without open source version in sight. Musk’s deliberate contrast with Openai certainly appears, at least somewhat.
After declaring his distrust of the CEO of Openai, Sam Altman, last fall, Musk underlined his Open Source model plan after having finished the next iteration to contrast with the Chatgpt creator.
It should be noted that @xai has been and will be opened its models, including weights and everything, as we create the next version, we open the previous version, as we did with Grok 1 when Grok 2 was published .October 4, 2024
Open thought
Not that XAI is unique in pursuing the open source vision. Meta has tried the open-source movement by freeing up aspects of its Llama models since their launch. The sudden AI superstar, in China, Deepseek, also pushed to Open-Source.
The Grok 2 open-source means that they could lead to intriguing IA tools that arise outside the usual closed gardens. We could see smaller companies and independent developers use it to create personalized chatbots and personalized AI assistants, such as an AI chatbot entirely formed on conventional literature or which helps independent video game developers to generate Traditions for their worlds. They could prove that you do not need an enclosed garden of several billion dollars to develop something revolutionary.
Again, some of these creations will depend on the type of limitations that will be cooked in the version. Even if XAI means it when it indicates that Grok 2 will be open source, the company could always have its cake and eat it too. The company can keep its peak products exclusive, but allow people to have the older version to generate good will, obtain a free innovation of independent developers and perhaps attract more people to register in Grok .
