At the time when the iPhone was still one thing, it was well understood that “represented” Special Edition “, but the application of this logic to the iPhone 16th, which Apple announced on February 19, has no sense. This would make it “the iPhone 16 edition”.
This “e”, however, must represent something.
Apple is not talking about it. Believe me, I asked. However, a little research reveals that Apple used the “E” a few times before. There was Emac in 2002, where “e” represented “education”. Such a nomenclature explained the intention of the product. Apple wanted schools to adopt this cheaper, square and candy color computer. I don’t think they were very successful.
Twenty years before that, Apple sold the Apple IIe, where the “E” on its second generation and the rather popular personal office PC represented “improved”.
As far as I know, these are the only times that Apple applied an “E” to a product name. However, the iPhone 16th is neither an “educational” smartphone nor exactly an “improved” model.
There are other ideas that I think, after reflection, which have a meaning, but first, we must take a step back and ask why this new XDR Super Retina 5G sports phone, 128 GB, 6.1 inch is not called the iPhone SE 4.
What does “e” mean for you?
Obviously, with its wealth of updates, including a more powerful rear camera (48MP fusion), the A18 chip which supports Apple intelligence, the face ID, wireless load and button D ‘Action, that has nothing to do with a model. It has much more in common with all the other iPhone 16 models. The notch, instead of a dynamic island, is strange and looks like going back but otherwise, the iPhone 16th resembles a part of the new family .
But these differences, such as the notch, the lack of Magsafe support and the control of the missing camera, also make it distinctive.
Perhaps you accept that some of these missing attributes may not be at the heart of the iPhone 16 experience (is the camera control necessary?) And, in balance, you could consider this phone of $ 599 “exciting” because it is relatively affordable while providing the “essential” iPhone 16 “” experience.
I think you get where I go. If I had to guess, I would say that Apple is a bit “enigmatic” and uses a handful of “E” words to define this model. This is not necessarily a bad thing because it means that the “E” in the iPhone 16th can mean what you want it to mean.
I think Apple has missed an opportunity here. It is the first and the only iPhone 16 with the new C1 cellular modem. The introduction of this Apple silicon piece is a huge business and makes the new special phone or “Special.” Why did Apple not name this, the iPhone 16S exceeds me.
It may not have been the answer you were looking for, but I think that is the one we have. I hope everyone agrees with that.
