Scott Sauerbeck, former pirate launcher, died at 53

Scott Sauerbeck, a former MLB launcher who played for four Grande League teams, died Wednesday in Florida. He was 53 years old.

Pittsburgh baseball has now reported that Sauerbeck had suffered a heart attack. He made his debut in the major league with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1999. The franchise confirmed Thursday the death of the launcher.

“The Pirate family cries the death of Scott Sauerbeck,” the team wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Scott played for BUCS from 1999 to 2003 and shares the club record for most matches launched by an LHP in one season.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this period.”

The 2002 season may have been the most memorable in Sauerbeck, because its 78 appearances set the Pirate franchise record for most of the matches launched in a single season. There remains the record.

Sauerbeck landed with the Boston Red Sox via a business during the 2003 season, later signing with Cleveland. He did not participate in any match in 2004 due to an injury.

A passage with athletics in 2006 marked its last round in the majors. Sauerbeck won a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2008.

Sauerbeck has an ERA of 3.82 in career and finished with a 20-17 file.
