- Windows 11 snipping tool seems to get an improved OCR function
- A new OCR option can more easily copy the text from everything on the monitor screen
- It is still in testing, but we hope that the finished version of Windows 11 will soon be
The Windows 11 snipping tool could soon be propelled with an impressive new way to extract the text from everything on the screen.
This capacity was discovered during tests by a regular contributor to leaks linked to Windows 11 on X, Phantomoforesh. However, we were not told what construction it came from, so it was probably the latest version of preview, or a recent version.
The snipping tool obtains a full -screen OCR text extractor which is essentially the PowerToys tool, reception box – Use of the best OCR models used by the snipping tool! Here is a demonstration. pic.twitter.com/zwteelk725February 20, 2025
You can see how it works to extract text (via OCR Tech, or optical character recognition) graceful of a video of the functionality in action in the post above on X.
To summarize, the user invokes the Windows 11 snipping tool, then chooses the “text extractor” function, drawing a box around the screen area from which he wants to draw from the text.
The Snipping tool then highlights all the text inside the box and offers an option to copy it in the clipboard, and from there, it can be glued to a document (or elsewhere).
It is true that Snipping Tool already has an OCR capacity, but it only works with a screenshot you have taken. This new approach is a much more rationalized and practical means of work, as you can simply use the functionality directly on everything that is currently displayed on the monitor screen.
Analysis: a useful PowerToys recruit
This gives the snipping tool a lot of flexibility so that, as indicated in the example above, eliminate all the text from a Windows 11 menu (if you wish). It will work for anything on the screen, and as you no longer need to take a screenshot, it makes the OCR function all the more practical as indicated.
This is something on which Microsoft has been working for some time now, while Phantomofeth observed the tool for the first time a few months ago in November 2024. It was considerably perfected since then, as the leak highlights , it is now mainly equivalent to the same functionality in the PowerToys suite from Microsoft.
With a little luck, this smooth form of OCR for Snipping could have arrived in the finished version of Windows 11 before too long.
